A Work In Progress: Update No. 5

Our tiny house has made a lot of progress since our last update and it is starting to feel more and more like a HOME! Christian and I feel so blessed to be able to create something together and watch our vision become a reality.
Updates on the interior include painted walls, tiled shower, and installed lighting and flooring. Our goal throughout this process has been to make financially responsible decisions by prioritizing what’s important to us and which areas we are able to save money in. Due to the nature of its size, it is easy to think you can splurge on each feature in a Tiny Home.  However, each element adds up and at the end of the day sacrifices must be made. We have ultimately tried to choose quality items that won’t break the bank but will hopefully last us for years to come.  So far we have been able to find solutions as such that we are very pleased with!

The Subway Tile shower is just about complete

White paint for the interior walls was cheaper than color and it will give the space an expansive feel, albeit in such a small space. Lord knows we need all the openness we can get in just 350 sq. ft!

We went with a classic subway tile look in the shower and loved the way it turned out. Although we would have preferred to have bamboo flooring for sustainability reasons, we were unable to because of the risk of warping in a house that is mobile. Bamboo floors need three days to assimilate into a specific climate, and when you move the tiny home changes in temperature and humidity could potentially damage the floor. This is just one of those little things that makes Tiny Homes unique and something that we needed to learn along the way.  We ended up playing it safe and went with cork-free luxury vinyl plank flooring that saved us money and was the next best sustainable option!

As for the exterior, the gables, trim and cedar are completely finished.  I can’t wait to see what it looks like outside in more flattering sunshine! Christian eventually wants to build a modular deck where we can extend our living space outdoors, but for now we just have to take things one step at a time. What do you guys think of the colors?

What’s Next?
This week our builder is working on the cabinetry installation, wood stain work for our sliding door, beam and maple countertops, and the metal work for our ladder and loft railing.  The only things standing between us and our first night in our Tiny Home are some finishing touches and then the big move!
